Dr Lian Zhu’s main research interests are in commercialisation and political communication of modern television, globalisation, international journalism, and in particular, the changing landscape of Chinese media in the last three decades.
She has been trying to examine how broadcasters are faced with the problem of squaring a circle made up of commercial imperatives on the one hand and party demands on the other. The experience she has gained from working as a freelance journalist/programme director/magazine editor across different media sectors for different media companies in China has enabled her to bring a better understanding of Chinese media industry into her research.
She is now lecturing in the Bournemouth Media School on Journalism and Communication.
